Navy slammed the gearshift of his SUV into park. He snagged his cell from its cradle on the dash and tapped the screen. Mr. Walgreen had been kind enough to let Navy take two days off to deal with his family crisis.

Living only thirty miles from his family had been the only negative about working for Casper and his old man. And it wasn’t even that he had to be in such close proximity to his family as much as he missed what the rest of the world had.

He hated to admit it, even only to himself, that Bobby had struck a nerve.

Navy: R U around?

Bubbles appeared on his screen immediately.

Bobby: Aren’t you supposed to be taking off right about now?

Navy: Change in plans. My father was taken to UCLA, Santa Monica Emergency Room a couple of hours ago.

His phone vibrated with an incoming call.

“Hey, Bobby. You didn’t have to call.” Navy stepped from his vehicle and slowly made his way toward the entrance.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know much. My little sister called just as I was boarding. She said he collapsed. That’s all the information I have.”

“How are you holding up?”

“Honestly? I don’t know.” Navy paused by the sliding doors that led to the emergency room. “The last time we spoke it wasn’t a pleasant conversation.”

“When was that?”

“A couple of months ago.” Navy raked a hand through his hair. He’d tried so hard not to get into it with his father, but no matter what happened, it always came down to the fact he’d never please the old man. “Like I said, we’re not close.”

“Where are you?”

“I just got to the hospital.”

“I’m actually doing a little research and I’m not far from where you are, so if you need me, just let me know. Now go find out how he is and let me know what’s going on. I’m here for you,” Bobby said. “Whatever you need.”

“Thanks. I really appreciate it. I’ll text you as soon as I find out anything. And Bobby?”

“Yeah?”

“You think you might be free later on tonight? To maybe just talk?”

“Do you want to come over? Or do you want me to come to your place?”

“If you don’t mind, you’re right on the water and I find that calming. I’m not and I think I’d like view,” Navy said as he stared at the sliding doors. His pulse beat wildly out of control. Being around his family always created a level of anxiety that he resented. It was the only thing in his life that felt out of control and he hated it. “I know that’s selfish of me, but—”

“Don’t think twice about it. It’s fine. I’ll text before I head home, or I can bring you by some food or whatever. Just stay in touch.”

“Will do.”

Navy really didn’t understand why he felt the need to bring Bobby into the mix, but he felt a hundred and ten percent better about going into the situation. He stiffened his spine, sucked in a deep breath, and entered the building on the hunt for his family.
